2016



2016 Kuala  Lumpur win  the 2016 MAKSAK chess team event title at the Kejohanan Catur, Dart dan Karom,  Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota-Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) held from 10th - 13th March  2016 at  Blue Wave Hotel, Shah Alam, Selangor. This year event is host by MAKSAK Selangor. 

  2016  -   The Malaysian Chess Championship 2016 ( formerly know as National Closed Chess Championship) was held from 16th-20th March 2016 at Sabah.  FM Yeoh Li Tian repeat his last year performance by winning the Open section.  In the women section, WFM Tan Li Ting emerged as the winner.

2015





2015 - 30th  September 2015 - Kuala  Lumpur  win the 2015 MAKSAK chess team event at the Kejohanan Catur, Dart dan Karom,  Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota-Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) held from 28th -31st May  2015 at  Alor Setar, Kedah. This year event is host by MAKSAK Kedah.  

 


 2015  -   Yeoh Li Tian  (Men) and WFM Nur Najiha Azman  (Women)  win the 2015 National Junior Championships title held at the 2nd Floor Ballroom, Olympic Hotel, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur from 14th-18th March 2015. The tournament is organized by Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF).

2014

2014 -  The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF)   organized   The 2014 National Closed Championships at 2ND FLOOR, WILAYAH COMPLEX, KUALA LUMPUR  from  12th March  2014 to 16th March  2014.

Fong Yit San won the Open  title and  Renitha Narayanan won the women title. 

2014 -  Mr. Laurence How (23rd Oct 1947 - 15th Mar 2014) one of the founders of Chess Association of Selangor passed away.  Read here

2013

2013 -  The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) and Persatuan Catur Negeri Terengganu (PCNT)  organized  the The National Closed Championships at the  Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Kuala Terengganu from  28th May 2013 to 1st June 2013.

Aron Teh won the Open  title and  WCM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham won the women title. 

2013 -   The Malaysian Inter State Team Championship was held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah by Sabah Chess Association. The last time this event was held was 15 years ago!

2013 - 30th  September 2012 - Johor  win the 2013 chess team event at the Kejohanan Catur, Dart dan Karom,  Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota-Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) held from 3rd - 6th October 2013 at  New York Hotel, Johor Bahru, Johor . This year event is host by Johor.

2013  -  Fong Yit San (Boys) and Tan Li Ting (Girls)  win the 2013 National Junior Championships title held at the 35th Floor of City Square in downtown Johor Bahru from 1st-5th December 2013 .

2012

2012 - Roshan Singh win the 2012 National Closed  which conclude on 27th - 31st  May  2012 at DATCC, Kuala Lumpur. Roshan is the  30th National Master (NM). In the women section,  Nur Najiha Azman Hisham is the new champion. She is  the 13th National Women Master (NWM).


2012- Malaysia participated at The 40th Chess Olympiad 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey.

2012 - IM Mok Tze Meng create a history in Malaysian chess by beating Dutch GM -  Loek Van Wely rating elo 2690 in the first round of the 2012 Olympiad, Turkey . This is  the strongest ever player beaten by a Malaysian player. Previously the record was held by IM Mashafizul who beat GM Ian Rogers (2618) in Saintly Cup 1999 and GM Victor Korchnoi (2607) in Olympiad Turin 2006.


2012 - 30th  September 2012 - Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur win the 2012 chess team event at the Kejohanan Catur, Dart dan Karom,  Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota-Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) held from 27th - 30th September 2012 at  Bilik Tanjung, Dewan Sri Pinang, Lebuh Light, Pulau Pinang . This year event is host by Pulau Pinang. 

Kuala Lumpur repeat their last two years victory and by doing so they create history by winning it three time in a row ( 2010, 2011 and 2012). Second to fourth place is  won by Terengganu (2nd) , Johor (3rd) and  Sarawak (4th).

2011

2011Lim Zhuo Ren win the 2011 National Closed  which conclude on 20th March 2011 at DATCC, Kuala Lumpur. Lim is the  29th National Master (NM). In the women section, WCM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham is the new champion. She is  the 12th National Women Master (NWM). Report is here

2011 - Kuala Lumpur  retain the Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) Championship. Runners up goes to Terengganu. 3rd and 4th goes to Sarawak and Pahang respectively.The team event was held in Heritage Hotel, Ipoh Perak. Read the report here

2010

2010 Singapore win the 2010 Malaysia-Singapore Chess Challange ( Dato Tan Kim Yeow Trophy) by a point margin - 76.5-75.5. The tournament was held in Citytel Express, (at Chow Kit Road) , KL from 15th-17th February 2010 ( During Chinese New year!?). There was 4 rounds with two classical time control and two rapid. The Singapore now lead the annual match which started in 1985 ( 10-9).


2010 - National (Open) and (Women) Championship was held and organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 18-20 June 2010.

Tan Khai Boon and Fong Mi Yen win the 2010 Open and Women National Championship respectively. Penangite - Tan Khai Boon won the open section with 8 points from 9 rounds. He lost the first round against Kedahan - Amri Hajar but Khai Boon never turn back by winning the remaining rounds. Win this victory, Tan Khai Boon received the National Master (NM) title.


National Master (NM) Tan Khai Boon received the Tun Hussein Onn Trophy from the President of Malaysian Chess Federation - Tan Seri Dato' Seri Diraja Ramli bin Ngah Talib.

Perakian - Fong Mi Yen finish with 7.5 points out of 9 rounds in the women section. She won seven games and only lost to Amira Syahmina Zulkafli in round 6 and draw against Camilia Johari in the final round to clinch the National Women Master (NWM) title .

National Women Master (NWM) Fong Mi Yen received the Tan Sri Sabbaruddin Chick Trophy from Ketua PALAPES UKM - Encik Abdul Rahim.


2010- Malaysia participated at The 39th Chess Olympiad 2010 in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia.

2009Evan Capel (Penang) win the 2009 National Closed  which was held from 30th May - 3rd June 2009  at DATCC, Kuala Lumpur. In the women section, 12 years old - Tan Li Ting  emerged as the champion. News is here

2008 - Terengganu win 2008 Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK). Runners up goes to Kuala Lumpur. The team event was held in Penang.

2008 Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib, former Perak Chief Minister, Cabinet Deputy Minister, Parliment Speaker was elected as the new Malaysian Chess federation (MCF) President . Read the news here



2008 - Edward Lee Kim Han  win the 2008 National Closed  which was held from 31st May - 4th June 2008  at DATCC, Kuala Lumpur. In the women section, Alia Anin Azwa Bakri  emerged as the champion. Report is here

2007

 

2007 Zarul Shazwan Zulkafli (man Category) from Persatuan Catur Malaysia (PCMM) won the National Closed Championship held at Banquet Hall, Universiti sains malaysia, Penang from 27th -31st May 2007. His younger sister NWM Nurshazwani won the women section held later on September 2007 at Citi Tel Midvalley. They repeat the record of sibling winning the National champion title for both the Men and Women's title in the same year as NM Kamal Ariffin and NWM Nurul Huda Wahiduddin did in the National Closed 1991.



2007 - Terengganu win 2007 Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK). Runners up goes to Perlis. The team event was host by PENJARA and held in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.


Mashafizul won Bronze medal in 2007 Asian Indoor Games (Classical) in Macau, China.
2007 - IM Mashaizul Helmi and WIM Siti Zulaika Foudzi win bronze medal in the 2007 ASIAN Indoor Games (Classical) in Macau.
2007 Quah Seng-Sun had written about chess in The Star newspaper in Malaysia since Aug 1980. The Star cancel this collumn in 2007.

2007 On June 17, 2007 within the framework of events devoted to the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and Malaysia the Embassy of Russia in Malaysia and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in Kuala Lumpur organized the Open Chess Tournament.


This event gathered together the Russian Embassy staff, “Russian Club” members to the RCSC, Malaysian top chess players, and traditional participants of regional and national tournaments. Among them were a former chess champion of Malaysia, a chess international master, two FIDE masters and others, total 26 participants.

2007 - The 4thMalaysian Chess Festival 2007 was held in MidValley, Kuala Lumpur. The festival has different competitions -

(i) 4th Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championship; (Champion - Li Chao - China)
(ii) 27th ASTRO-Merdeka Team Championship (Rapid)- (Champion -Apocalypse Manila - Philippines)
(iii) 25th ASTRO-Merdeka Standard Team Championship - (Champion -ASTRO ); and
(iv) 2nd Ambank Chess Challange ; (Champion -Cantonjos Allan O.- Philippines)


2007 Merdeka Team Tournaments been held for the 27th times in Kuala Lumpur. Actually the tournaments is part of the Malaysia Chess Festival 2007 which consist 5 tournamants. 1. 4th Dato’ AT Malaysian Open 2. AmBank Chess Challenge 3. 2006 Jonathan Chuah (Man category) from Penang won the National Closed Championship. WFM Siti Zulaikha Foudzi won the women section. She is the longest holder of the NWM title with a record of 8 consecutive years.

2006 - Malaysia participated at The 37th Chess Olympiad 2006 in Turin, Italy.

2006 Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Tronoh, Perak break Malaysian Book of Records for organizing a chess tournament which was involved 960 participants!

2006 Asean Chess Academy(ACA) Opens Its First Branch in Malaysia in 22 Oct 2006

Asean Chess Academy Pte Ltd has opened its first regional branch, in Malaysia. Managed by Intchess (M) Sdn Bhd, the branch premises was open in November at No. 22-1 (1st Floor), Jalan 27/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. Enquiries to Mr Peter Long . Trainers available there are: FT, IA Nguyen Tan Tung (Vietnam) - now seconded to Laos Chess Federation, FI, FM Geldyev, Kochmurad (Turkmenistan) - now seconded to Korea Chess Association, IM Gwaze, Robert (Zimbabwe) and FM Long, Peter (Malaysia).2006 Dato' Tan Chin Nam was persuaded to step back into the picture as MCF’s interim president to fill a position left vacant by the then incumbent who did not wish to be re-elected. But Tan made it very clear that the MCF would have to find a new president when his own two-year term expired. 


2006 - The 3rd Malaysian Chess Festival 2006 was held in the CitiTel Midvalley and MidValley Megamall , Kuala Lumpur.  The festival involve 4 different competitions -


(i) 3rd Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championship;  (Champion - GM Dao Tien Hai- Vietnam )
(ii) 26th ASTRO-IGB Merdeka Team Championship; (Champion -Tagaytay City - Philippines)

2005 Marcus Chan (Man category) won the National Closed Championship. NM Siti Zulaikha Foudzi won the women section.

2004 - The 1st Malaysian Chess Festival was held in the MidValley , Kuala Lumpur. The Dato' Arthur Tan Open is a memorial competition organised by Dato' Tan Chin Nam in honor of his son - Dato Arthur Tan Boon Shih.The festival has different competitions -

(i) 1st Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championship; (Champion - GM Ni Hua - China)
(ii) 24th Merdeka Team Championship ; (Champion- ?)

2004 - Chess was not listed in Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK).

2003 (December 06,) GM Yasser Seirawan from US gave a simultaneous display in Chess Network, Wilayah Kompleks, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Note: the red circle player is me :)

2003 Malaysia took three bronze medal at 22nd Vietnam SEA Games


2003 Siti Zulaikha Foudzi was the first Malaysia woman to receive the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title at the Vietnam Zonal. Malaysian Audrey Wong was the first to receive WIM in 80's

2002

2002 - Sarawak win 2002 Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK). Runners up goes to Kuala Lumpur. The team event was held in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.


2002 The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) organised the World Youth Olympiad (U16), which was on that year open to players born in 1986 or later. Some nations fielded two teams (China, Singapore, Hong Kong) and some three (Australia, Malaysia). Following the last-minute withdrawal of Zambia, Malaysia has added a fourth team in order to even out the numbers. The tournament was declared open by Kirsan Ilumzhinov. Following a speech to the assembled players and officials, Ilumzhinov made a symbolic first move (e4) on an extremely large chess set installed in the centre of the hall.

(photo left : Kazakhstan vs England)Second seeds China "A" took clear first on the back of an 85% score on board 1 by Wang Yue and an 80% score on board 2 by Zhao Jun. Top seeds the Ukraine finished second but could be said to have underperformed with IM Areshchenko scoring only 60% on board 1 and future GM Karjakin losing a lot of points on board 2 with a 75% (performance rating of about 2373) score. Seventh seeds Indonesia took third place and fourth seeds India finished 4th. Overperformances were achieved by 11th seeds Uzbekistan (5th) and 17th seeds Singapore (9th). 5th Seeds England (13th) and 3rd seeds Romania (6th) performed less well.


2002 Malaysia team participated at the 35th Olympiad in Bled, Slovenia. The man team seeded 101, finished 75th place with 27.5 points out of 134 teams. The women team placed 62nd with 20 points.

2002 ex Malaysian chess coach the legendary Gorgeian GM Eduard Gufeld (photo right) died. He died on September 23, 2002 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He had suffered a massive stroke two weeks earlier and had been in a coma since. He had been at Midway Hospital but then had been transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on September 22.


He was born in the Ukraine on 19 March 1936. In the late 1950s had established himself as one of the strongest players in the world, defeating Tal, Spassky, Smyslov, Korchnoi, Bronstein, and just about ever other strong Soviet player. He was also a prolific author who wrote over 100 chess books.




2002 MCF secretary Abdul Hamid Majid (photo right) has been elected as a member of the FIDE executive board at the Bled Olympiad in Slovenia. The first time a Malaysian is picked for a FIDE job.

2002 GM Nigel Short in Malaysia. English GM Nigel Short, while enroute to China, stopped by Malaysia from 11 to 18 July 2002 to play a series of simultaneous chess matches in Penang and Kuala Lumpur. In his first simul against schoolchildren in Penang on 12 July, he scored +29 =1 -0 while Short's second simul against mixed players in Penang on 13 July ended +25 =3 -2 in his favour. Thereafter, Short won 4-0 in a private clock simul in Kuala Lumpur on 16 July against a field that included IM Mas Hafiulhelmi and FM Wong Zi Jing. He also played a third public simul in Kuala Lumpur on 17 July, winning it with a +22 =5 -3 result

2001

2001 Lim Chuin Hoong (Penang) won the National Championship.NM Siti Zulaikha Foudzi won the women section.

2001 IM Mas Hafizulhelmi FIDE rating reach 2456 in April 2001 - the highest ever FIDE rating for any Malaysia


2001 - Terengganu win 2001 Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK). Runners up goes to Sarawak. The team event was held in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.


2001 Singapore won the Annual Malaysia-Singapore match held at Singapore (42.5-47.5)

2001 Datuk Sabaruddin Chik stepped down as the Malaysia Chess Federation president. The committee accepted his resignation without any objections. Deputy president Datuk Mohamad Rosli bin Abdul Aziz took charge as acting president.

2000

2000 Ng Tze Han (Penang) won the National Championship. NM Siti Zulaikha Foudzi won the women section.
2000 Malaysia participated at the 34th World Chess Olympiad in Instanbul, Turkey . The man team achieved their best overall result ever by finishing in 64th place with 28.5 points from 14 rounds. The woman team finished in 60th placing with 20 points.

2000 MERDEKA Day Chess Tournament is recognised by the goverment as part of the events to celebrate the National Day.

2000 - The organisers and participants of this year's tournament, played at the Putra World Trade Centre, had to be thankful to the Youth and Sports Ministry. The Sports Ministry had stepped in to save the event after its fate hung in the balance following the Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry's decision early this year to cut off its Merdeka financial aid to the MCF nearly affecting almost 20 years of an uninterrupted Merdeka team chess championship come to an abrupt end

2000 The Wah Seong Penang International Master Chess Tournament 2000 were held at Penang. Mok Tze Meng achieved his first IM norm.


2000 - Sarawak win 2000 Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota- Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK). Runners up goes to Kuala Lumpur. The team event was held in Kuala Lumpur.


2000 (December) Malaysian Chess Federation ended the old millennium by organising a very quiet and largely unpublicised double round-robin masters tournament, comprising six of the country's senior and junior players, at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur .
2000 Malaysia won the Annual Malaysia - Singapore match for the fifth consecutive years held at KL.

2000 Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) in 1998 targeting IM Mashafizul to be the first Malaysian Grandmaster by the year 2000 didn't materialized -source Malay Mail 10 July 1998

1999

1999 IM Mas Hafizul Helmi played at the GM Saintly Cup in Australia and made an up set by defeating GM Ian Rogers (Australia) and draw with GM Joel Benjamin (US).

1995 1st round of the Malaysia-Singapore Match was played at Malaysia, Malaysia won 36-24. The popularity of this match was such that in 1995, there were even two matches played. The second such match in 1995 was played in Singapore and it was won by the Singaporeans with a very close 30 1/2-29 1/2 result.



1995 The first issue of Majalah Catur (Chess Magazine) was published on January 1995. The following issues came out monthly after that but stop after the 6th issue. The only officially sanctioned magazine that was ever published by the Malaysian Chess Federation was the Catur Magazine. 1993 - MCF and the Singapore Chess Federation have decided that beginning with the 1993 Malaysia-Singapore match will be contested annually to cement the close ties between the two countries. The 1993 annual match was played in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia won 33-19 over the visitors. This marked the first of three consecutive wins by the Malaysians as they also won the 1994 and 1995 matches.
