1984 Jimmy Liew won the National Championship

1984 - The 7th  Malay Open (Kejohanan Catur Melayu Malaysia) took place at Dewan Besar UTM, Jalan Gurney, Kuala Lumpur. Mohd Nor Yahya emerged as the champion.

1984-Malaysia first IM Jimmy Liew (25 years old) was a joint winner at the Parkway Parade Open which is the second leg of the Asian IM chess circuit and obtain his final IM norm.

The gong of the first round sounded on the 19th November, the day when Capablanca was born. The USSR team had to fight hard against the inexperienced youths of Malaysia .
